History & Habitat
Midsomer Norton Town Council has leased this 3-hectare grassland site adjacent to the Wellow Brook from the Duchy of Cornwall, with the aspiration to improve wildlife habitats on site and encourage community use. A public footpath runs through the site from the Thicket Mead area of Midsomer Norton in the west to Welton in the east with the Norton Radstock cycleway forming the northern boundary.
Benches and picnic tables have been put in place to allow residents to enjoy this wildlife corridor. Information signs and a totem pole have been installed.
The site comprises of grassland, scrub, hedgerows and the Wellow Brook. The grassland has some species diversity but is currently being adversely affected by lack of management and scrub encroachment.
Future Plans
Wellow Brook Walk has a site masterplan and Midsomer Norton Town Council have already made improvements to the footpath, installed seating and picnic benches and improved the west entrance from Northmead Road.
This project proposes to:
- Coppice some areas of scrub / trees alongside the Wellow Brook to let more light into the watercourse
- River improvements
- Enhance grassland
- Engage with the local community in habitat management and wildlife monitoring through training and volunteer days
