History & Habitat

In 2017 Midsomer Norton Town Council purchased the fields alongside the River Somer and Norton Hill Batch – a former coal spoil heap to develop as a Town Park.

This 8 hectare site is located close to Midsomer Norton High Street and is made up of riverside meadows and a steep coal ‘Batch’. From the top of the Batch there are far-reaching views over Midsomer Norton and the Somer Valley. Other entrances into the park link in communities from Westfield and Radstock and the Five Arches cycle-path forms the eastern boundary of the site.

The land comprises of species rich grassland, woodland and scrub. The Batch supports three different species of orchid and is an important pollinator site.
