Mosses, Liverworts and Lichens Identification training day

Rupert and Dawn are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced in plant identification. As expert ecologists, they have run several courses on plant identification and regularly lead botanical meetings for Bristol Naturalists Society.

They will be leading this half-day training aimed at local people who would like to be introduced to the fascinating organisms that are lichens and mosses (“lower plants” or “cryptograms”). They will introduce you to the differences between the various groups, their structure and lifestyle, the terminology used in describing them, the identification features of some common species and their ecological roles. The varied habitats at the Town Park ensure that a good range of species is present.

We’ll meet in Midsomer Norton Town Park and will be based outside for this practical training.

Timings:

12:20 – Meet at Midsomer Norton Town Park entrance

12:30pm – Introductions and outline the session.

12:40pm – 3:00pm – Discussion, observations and identification whilst walking (slowly)

Please bring:

  • Water/drink and snack
  • Weather-appropriate clothing (looking at moss and lichen tends to involve moving at a very slow pace so layers are advised).
  • Strong practical footwear with covered toes
  • Notebook and pen

We will have some hand lenses but please bring your own if you have them.

If you have any questions – please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Emma Carlisle, for more information.
