SUMMARY:Tai Chi 8-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:An 8-week beginner’s Tai Chi course for people interested in trying something new! Taking place at the Somer Centre\, near Midsomer Norton Town Park. This course is led by an experienced Tai Chi instructor\, Bruce. \nAll abilities are welcome. \nBruce will be teaching the ‘Ba Men’ (which translates as 8 Gates). This is a short sequence of 8 moves which train the basic principles or energies of Tai Chi. \nThe moves of the Ba Men are fairly easy to learn – at the start\, as one learns the movements the practice is gentle\, opening the joints\, building a more connected body etc but it can also be practised in a way that’s much harder and while one is still moving slowly it provides much more of a workout – so it can be tailored to the needs of those attending without the need to teach different things to different people. \nThis class will be taking place inside the Somer centre\, small hall or on the lawned area just outside the Somer centre\, if the weather allows. \nWe will be meeting at the Somer Centre\, Gullock Tyning\, Midsomer Norton\, Radstock\, BA3 2UH. We will meet in the small hall\, ready to begin at a prompt 11.45am. \nThis class is for adults only. \nClass dates; \nThursday 16th January \nThursday 23rd January \nThursday 30th January \nThursday 6th February \nThursday 13th February \nThursday 20th February \nThursday 27th February \nThursday 6th of March \nPlease book in advance for the course as spaces are limited. \nIf you have any accessibility requirements or questions\, please email Phoebe at somervalleyrediscovered@bathnes.gov.uk

SUMMARY:Try Out Hazel Hurdling!
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE – previous event rescheduled due to poor weather\, spaces are available! \nDetails \n\nHazel grows prolifically around us in this landscape\, since it was once an important material for making many things including hurdle fences to contain animals. Most of the hazel coppices around us have been unused and neglected for many years. We will be walking through the woods of Waterside Valley and towards Haydon Batch\, cutting and harvesting hazel. This will be used to make hurdle fences. \nWhy? Because it’s fun! And coppicing stimulates new growth so is good for the hazel stand. Also\, it connects us to the amazing versatility of the trees growing around us\, by learning to choose\, harvest\, prepare\, soften and work with the hazel rods that sprout abundantly from the base of each tree. You will learn how to make something that could be useful in your own garden as a fence or border. \nWe will move at a companionable pace\, break when we need to\, and take in turns with any heavier work. This is a 2-day course; on the 6th we will be mostly harvesting; most of the hurdle-making will be on the 7th. Come for either or ideally both. \n\n\n\nInstructions \n\nBring strong leather or other gardening gloves if you have them\, a packed lunch (or get something from Radstock shops/ cafe)\, and warm clothes – waterproofs when appropriate. Strong footwear is also needed. If you don’t have these but want to come\, get in touch and we will try to help.
